YES!
Buys me a bit more time in finding another job which has been pretty slow going thus far and I still maintain the caveat that I can leave whenever I find another job.
It makes me feel good that they are clamouring to keep me for as long as they can at this point (and some things will change in the department in September) but I also hate that it means I have to keep training the woman who took my job because it is slowing down my daily work routine. Sometimes to the point where I curse the entire scientific law of inertia.
But I gots to pay the bills!
…and today is the day the decide to update me to Office 2010.
It’s like Christmas! If Christmas was in July and you had group meetings with the local Santas, arguing over the merit of your wishlist and whether the ‘toys’ you ask for are relevant.
I honestly and truly feel for you guys. I had to fight hard for this to happen because it meant all 15 people in the office had to get it as well and they thought that 2003 was the pinnacle of awesomeness and argued with them about it at length. I’ve been tasked with giving everyone 10 mins with me who wants it to learn the basics. Which is hilarious because otherwise, they’re not really keen on giving me any responsibility beyond being the Queen of Name Tags [name they gave me, ugh].
So there was A LOT of apologizing on her end and a semi-concession that I was the one with the actual know-how to do this project but I still couldn’t get past the fact that she was handed something hurriedly so she turned around and did the same to me, hoping that apologizing later would be enough.
She gets points for sincerity though.
When we moved onto another topic, she took issue with my calling her “picture header” as dated and looking like clipart (but it does!) so maybe I lose points but seriously, this set up looks like a toddler set it up.
This project that I previously alluded to requires that I know the ins and outs of FIPPA - Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Luckily, I already do because of my last job but no one in the office is up on it so I have to give a talk to them about it regarding our records specifically and so I can finish the digitizing project without unnecessary interruptions.
It is exceedingly hard to translate legal-ese into layman’s terms for a handout regarding the topic without just typing in big letters “Don’t do anything you were doing before. Just do what I tell you to do. The end.”
But I digress.
They asked me today to submit all the vacation I would like from now until the end of summer. Since I have no plans, and just take a day here or there for 3 day weekends to go home, they said I didn’t need to in the beginning. But today I absolutely had to. So I just sat here with everyone’s calendar open and booked around things though trying to take advantage of holidays. Just made stuff up.
Thank GOODNESS I remembered to take a day off for this* even though it’s a Friday evening. Too bad. Maybe the people I’m going with will arrive well early from Ottawa!
*Oh, I didn’t mention I was going to see Jeff Mangum? My bad. That’s right, be jealous.
things I said inside my head today, and it’s not even 10am. Ugh. I have to give a ‘talk’ at our bi-weekly meeting in an hour on how filing/records work. I’ve been allotted 5 whole minutes. Yay?
